GIS accepts enrollment applications year round but enrolls students based on space available and per the priority list. Per California law, we must request certain documents when applying, such as:

-Proof of birthdate (i.e. birth certificate, passport, immunization record)

-Proof of immunizations (see detailed information below)

*There must be no immunizations due to submit an application and be eligible to participate in the lottery.

-Home language survey


Below is the timeline for enrolling for the 2017-2018 school year.

Applications are available in May each year. Summer school is for incoming K-8th students only.

All Transitional Kinder and Kindergarten students must submit:

       -Complete immunization verification before the first day of school or valid medical                             exemption. No personal belief exemptions are allowed for TK and K students.

All records must be complete and include the date your child was given each required shot and be stamped or signed by the doctor or clinic.The table below lists what immunizations are required to enroll.

Polio (OPV/IPV) There should be four (4) dates and stamps.

There should be five (5) dates and stamps.

MMR There should be two (2) dates and stamps.
Hepatitis B There should be three (3) dates and stamps.
Varicella Chickenpox There should be one (1) date and stamp or verification of the disease.


All 7th grade students must submit:

      -Complete immunization verification before the first day of school or valid medical                              exemption. No personal belief exemptions are allowed for 7th graders.


All other grades must submit upon initial enrollment*:

      -Complete immunization verification before the first day of school, valid CA exemption or                    medical exemption.    

*Valid personal belief exemptions apply only to students transferring within California schools for grades 1-6. Students enrolling from out-of-state must have all immunizations or valid medical exemption.   


To protect the health of children, California law requires a health examination on school entry. Please have this report filled out by a health examiner and return it to the school. The school will keep and maintain it as confidential information.

All students entering, advancing or transferring into 7th grade will also need proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster immunization (called “Tdap”) BEFORE 1st day of school.



All documents such as enrollment packet, birth certificate, and immunization record must be given to the GIS office either:

Priority List

  1. Existing students of GIS
  2. Sibling of students admitted to or attending GIS who reside in SJUSD
  3. Sibling of students admitted to or attending GIS who reside outside the SJUSD
  4. Children of GIS employees who reside in the District
  5. Children of GIS employees who reside outside the District
  6. All other residents of the District
  7. All other applicants
